Rotary Club of Millcreek – Meeting Minutes – June 14, 2012

Attendees:  Chris Casper, Ladd Tanner, Sonia Woodbury, Shannon Tilly, Laurie Summers-Pisani, Margereta Vlasic, Kim Williams, Judy Zone, Linda Book, Bill Kille, John Zone, Ken Klinger, Miriam Kramer

Guests – Patrick Casady (District Guest) and Frank Lilly (potential member)

Agenda:

Awards – our club was awarded the Changemaker Award (one of several finalists) and then chosen as the Zone Winner.  Way to go RCMC.  We are paving the way for big changes.

Pins and nametags – each member was awarded the Rotary Club pin for 2011/2012 – “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity”.  See Laurie for a pin.

Margereta Vlasic volunteered to create nametags to wear at each meeting to get to know one another better

Business – we need to nominate a President Elect as well as replacements for each officer.  The new roles will be in effect in July of 2013.  The club will have a nomination team.  As a very active club, we nominated and made the following changes:
  • Ladd Tanner moved from Youth to International Service
  • Shannon Tilley was nominated and confirmed to lead Youth for 2012/13

Dues will be increased $10 for the next quarter to cover the charge for three business meetings a month rather than two.  Watch for the increase on your next statement

Retreat Summary– Laurie gave us a summary of our retreat and new vision.  Future planning meetings will focus on forming committees, timelines and measurements to achieve our goals in 2012/13.

Dash for Donations – Linda Book presented a great project for us to support – Dash for Donations.  Our club can support organ donation.  More information will be presented at an upcoming meeting.  Mark your calendars for a fun run on Saturday, August 11 at 8am at Sugarhouse Park.

Wine to Water – Judy presented a summary of the event and support needed.  Watch for an e-mail from Judy.

Laurie granted official pins to our newest members:  Bill Kille and Shannon Tilly – welcome to our club!

Sergeant at Arms – we collected a lot of happy dollars:  Judy is happy her grandkids are coming to town, Linda is going to Hawaii, Margereta is planning and celebrating her mother’s 90th birthday in Sweden next week, Laurie is happy we didn’t have a Board Meeting tonight.

Meeting adjourned.

Our next meeting is Thursday, June 21 at 5:15 at Café Madrid.

Our member, Dr. Linda Book, encourages us to consider Donate Life & organ donation promotion as a core service project

Dear Rotary Club of Millcreek members:

Here are some thoughts about how our Rotary Club could really make a difference and even save lives by assisting the Donate Life group in Utah.  Visit the website When organizations like ours promote organ donation it increases credibiity and interest.

My colleague, Dr. Terry Box, who is formally involved in this group, gives a compelling presentation. We should consider having him visit the club. Another speaker could be Dixie Madsen,
Public Education Coordinator, Intermountain Donor Services.

Here are some other ways we could engage with Donate Life:

On Saturday, August 11 we can go as a group to the Dash for Donation 5K walk/run at Sugarhouse Park. Rotaracters or Interactors may want to be involved:
  • $27 individual racer early registration (before August 8)
  • $30 individual racer late registration (after August 8 and day of race)
  • $20 team registration (5 or more racers)
  • $15 children 18 and under
This August we have a lot going on with the Wine into Water Fundraiser, but some support we could consider for this Dash for Donation Annual Walk/Run could be:
  1. Make a sign with Rotary Club of Millcreek on it for the paviliion for the event at the park
  2. Help with a picnic at this event for our children and families who have had transplants. Interact and Rotaract could help plan activities and entertainment.

At any time of year, or during Donation Week, we could:
  1. Promote organ donation at Westminster and City Academy (Rotaract and Interact), at our own businesses and through our own associations. Pass our donate life pins, materials etc.
  2. Have our business people put up a poster in their workplace promoting organ donation during Donate Life week.
  3. If anyone has a billboard connection, there is design material ready to go.

June 7, 2012 - Rotary Club of Millcreek Retreat Notes

A big thank you to Kim Williams for taking us through a vision and strategic priority session - what a productive night!

Members attending: Christine Casper, Margareta Vlasic, Judy Zone, Jennie Ferguson, Mustafa Celebi, Ken Klinger, Jason Collier, Paul Halliday, Laurie Summers-Pisani, Sonia Woodbury, Miriam Kramer, Ladd Tanner, Kim Williams, Bill Kille, Peter Ingle, Linda Book

We went through several vision and discussion items to craft the following vision for the Rotary Club of Millcreek:

We are a non-traditional, socially interactive Rotary Club that provides opportunities to serve our local and international community.  We value diversity, youth, improving lives, empowering communities, networking, and having fun.

Ladd Tanner sent a copy of the strategic priorities to each member via e-mail on Friday, June 8.  Please read through our priorities for the Rotary Fiscal Year - July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2013.  In summary, the priorities are:
  1. Empower our Rotary Club
  2. Community and International Service including youth service
  3. Fundraising
We set annual goals under each of the priorities above and committees will now work to assign timelines, measurements and team members.

We are on a roll!

Please join us for our next meeting at 5:15 on June 14 at Cafe Madrid.  See you there.
