  • 6-Derick spoke about innovative fundraiser idea called Reverse Opportunity:  they sold (actually requested donations for each ticket) 200 tickets at $100 each.  Then they had a dinner with free food and beer.  During the dinner they pulled names from the lot and the last name in the barrel wins ½ the pot, $10,000.  The other ½ is what has been raised.  People could buy out the names of people whose name was not picked yet.  The names that were drawn went into another barrel  to win donated prizes.

  • 8-There are pins for every year, and this year's pins are being obtained.  They have a rainbow on them.
  • 9-Happy dollars:  Pablo Fiesta gave $20 Happy Dollars for earning his Blue Belt along with his children and their exchange student.

May 3 Meeting Minutes

In attendance: Julie Bateman, Linda Book, Sandra Clark, Jennie Ferguson, Bill Kille, Miriam Kramer, Susan Marks, Annie Nielsen, Laurie Summers-Pisani, Ladd Tanner, Sonia Woodbury, John Zone, Judy Zone. Guests: Bob Book and Morgan Ware.

1.      President Elect Laurie Summers-Pisani led our meeting, announcing that Megan Dunn has resigned due to personal reasons. We wish her the best. Laurie is now our President!
2.      Morgan Ware, a Heber Valley Rotarian, was our guest and discussed District Conference June 1 & 2 at Zermatt. Go to www.urdc.com for more information and to register. You can attend both days or only one day. Room rates at Zermatt for Conference attendees are reduced to $119/night.

3.      Judy Zone gave an overview of District Grant applications that can be used for local or international service projects. Deadline of application submission is July 1. Since our club does not have a lot of cash reserve, those interested in submitting a grant will either have to make that tax deductible contribution ($500 - $1,000) themselves, enlist club members and/or other Rotary Clubs in the project. If you have an idea for a District Grant, please email Judy judy@youthlinc.org

4.      Sonia Woodbury mentioned that one of our Interactors from City Academy has raised the necessary funds to go on the District Interact Mexico trip June 9-17. Another student needs more financial support.

5.      Miriam Kramer updated us on our ‘informal’ Exchange student visiting Jan-March 2013. Karlita is the 17 year old daughter of Carlos Acosta, an Iquitos, Peru Rotarian who is the Youthlinc Peru in-country coordinator. Paul Halliday will host her at his home, Sonia has agreed to have her on a temporary basis at City Academy, and we all will need to be entertaining her in some way during her stay. If you have ideas, email Miriam at miriam@youthlinc.org

6.      Club members discussed the idea of a wine tasting party as a fundraiser this summer. We do need a venue, and we might have guests bring two bottles of wine as part of their entrance: one for tasting and one for the ‘kitty’. In an opportunity drawing, guests could win the ‘kitty’ wine. Another idea is to sell only 100 tickets for $100, and use a portion of the cash as the opportunity drawing prize, with members bringing the wine that will be tasted. We could use this event to raise money for District Grants, or a community project like a bench at the Millcreek Library. Bill Kille will look into the bench. Miriam will look into appliances for the Bhutanese refugee community.

7.      Reminders:
