Rotary Club of Millcreek - Meeting Minutes - July 9, 2015

Refugee Mentoring Update - 
  • Chris and Laurie took their family from Tanzania hiking at Cecret Lake on Wednesday night, along with their husbands and kids.  The experience was more than rewarding.   Urgent needs have been met for the family.  Rose will provide a pair of shoes for one child.  Through our mentor liaison, Erica, and club member, Laurie, the family will attend the Care Fair tomorrow to receive medical, dental, vision etc screening.  
  • The club agreed to spend $100 per child on school clothes.  More information is coming.    The same amount will be allocated to Marty and Ladd's family.
  • Judy asked reach member to send via email an inventory of furniture and household items to donate to the refugee program.  date may be moving

Wine into Water Update - 

  • Treasurer Ladd let us know we will pre-pay our fund raiser fees of $3000 for the Guatemala project.  The grant has been received and other donors are ready to get the project going.
  • Laurie reviewed assignments and Danny volunteered to coordinate food assignments and donations for wine
  • Each member is responsible for selling and/or buying six tickets at $60 each.  Note the event is on September 12.  
  • Be sure to keep receipts for purchases so you can receive a tax deductible donation receipt
Happy Bucks -

  • Shannon and Ladd provided emotional happy bucks showing the friendship, support  and camaraderie in our club
Actions needed by you-
  • Send Judy donation items inventory as soon as possible
  • Sell six tickets to our annual fiund raiser
  • Attend the Installation Dinner at Cafe Madrid on August 6
  • Attend the potluck at Margereta's on a date in August TBD

Minutes of July 2, 2015 Meeting

In attendance: Rose Defa, Margareta Vlasic, Susan Marks, Danny Schoenfeld, Laurie Summers-Pisani, Mike Siegel, Judy Zone

Rotary moments: Judy shared that new member Justin Powell will learn all about Global Grants from the ‘master’ in our District, Bruce Powell. Susan shared that she will be on the ‘supply side’ of The Rotary Foundation for the District. She will be briefing our club on Foundation Giving, especially Paul Harris Fellowships. Judy reminded members that – because of our contributions to Global Grants in the last two years – we have 6 Paul Harris Fellowships to award, hopefully at our Installation Dinner.

American Cancer Society representative Cidne Christensen discussed Utah stats on cancer, screening for underserved, and their new Hope Lodge where family and friends of those receiving cancer treatments can stay for no donation or a donation of any kind.
Members agreed to attempt to put together a team of 10 (each raising or pledging $100) for the Relay for Life event on Friday Sept 18, 4pm till Midnight on the grounds of the Hope Lodge 400 East 100 South. Margareta will organize this event when she returns from Nepal. Let her know your interest in participating.

In other news:
Installation Dinner to be held during our regular business meeting Thursday August 6 5:30pm at Café Madrid. Evite coming. Please bring significant other and friends interested in Rotary for this brief program celebrating our Rotary Year in service!

All of our refugee family liaisons (Laurie/ Chris, and Marty/Ladd) are in process, developing a list of needs for our club members to meet. Look for Judy’s email coming soon.

South Salt Lake Promise is holding a donation day on Saturday July 25. Please develop a list of household items and furniture that you could donate and send that list to Judy by Sunday July 12. She will work with South Salt Lake staff who will know what is needed, and let you know. A few members have already volunteered box trucks and pickup trucks to get and deliver items. If you have a truck, van, pickup, let Judy know.

Wine into Water is Saturday September 12:
Invite 6 friends.
Mike Siegel has volunteered to provide craft beer for a booth.

Next week’s business meeting will include a discussion of Wine into Water and more information on refugee family mentoring.
