February 2 Meeting Minutes

At the meeting: Susan Brown, Jason Collier, Megan Dunn, Sarah Grant, Paul Halliday, Peter Ingle, Miriam Kramer, Susan Marks, Laura Rogers, Ron Stevens, Laurie Summers-Pisani, Andrea White, Sonia Woodbury and Judy Zone

President Megan Dunn began the meeting and shared the new name badge design. She will make some design modifications, and will bring an updated example to the February 9th meeting.
She also gave us more details on the vocational speed mentoring event with the Rotaract club at Westminster College on February 24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The students will be asking questions about careers as well as your experiences as Rotarians. Additional information can be found on the blog. The information you share is valuable, so please sign up.
  
Sarah Grant was appointed as the membership chair. She will handle the details of distributing membership information and accepting new members. As Utah’s first ‘Happy Hour’ club, the clubs growth continues so she should stay busy!  

Laurie Summers-Pisan accepted the nomination to be our club’s President Elect Nominee. Laurie and our current President, Megan Dunn, will attend the District’s President Elect Training Seminar February 24-25 in Provo.  

Sonia Woodbury talked about the Interact (students 15 to 18 years) and Rotaract (18 to 30 years) groups. Both groups want to contribute to local service projects, and are working to raise money for an International Service trip to Mexico. When there, they will be help with building and community literacy. Boxes of beautiful oranges will be for sale by the Rotaract group to raise money for the trip. Miriam will have more information soon.

Susan Marks, District Trainer, shared some excellent information on our first “learning exchange.” She explained about the Rotary’s Guiding Principles, Five Avenues of Service, and the Four Way Test (the guiding principle). Peter Ingle, International Service Chair, is working on applying for district grant funds for a service project abroad.

Miriam explained more about the Bhutanese service project. The community needs assistance learning information for their U.S. Citizenship exam. It was agreed that club members will meet on the third Saturday of the month from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. After that, club members will meet at a nearby restaurant and have dinner together. Miriam will bring additional details to the next meeting.    

Other announcements:

  • Ken will be sending bills out next month. It was decided that those who make late due payments will be fined. So, to avoid additional costs, pay by the March 30 th due date.
  • The next social will be February 23, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. Stay tuned for more information.

John Zone, our Sgt. at Arms, was not at the meeting. Jason Collier took his place and began with a fine of $10 to John for not attending. Ken Klinger was also fined $10 for being a no-show. Andrea White was fined $5 for not attending the Charter dinner, and Ladd Tanner was fined $50 (ouch!), for RSVPing and then not showing.   

$1 was paid by Peter Ingle, Andrea White and Susan Marks for ringing the gong.

The next meeting will be on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 5:15 p.m. It will be at the Youthlinc office located at 1140 E.BrickyardRd, suite 76, SLC (on the 2nd floor of the strip mall between Home Goods & Kohls).
